Event Diaries: Sisterhood Outdoors with Convivir Colorado

At Asian Girls Ignite, we are on a mission to build a strong community of Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) girls and women to celebrate our individual and collective power through shared stories. Our Event Diaries series was created to share meaningful moments with our community. We are incredibly grateful to have the support of our families and community members behind us. Sharing an inside look at our events is just one of the many ways we want to keep the AGI community informed of the impact of their support.

Sisterhood Outdoors with Convivir Colorado

Recently, we co-hosted our first Sisterhood Outdoors event with Convivir Colorado. Convivir Colorado is a Denver-based non-profit that supports youth impacted by migration as they find power in their migrant experience and use it to enrich themselves and their Colorado communities.

We want to thank our supporters at Arc’teryx for sponsoring this event. Your support made all the difference and helped make the event memorable for us.

This year, Sisterhood Outdoors took place at Snow Mountain Ranch. Upon arrival, we participated in community building activities led by AGI's Youth Leadership Collective (Huge thanks to Naiya, Katie, and Eleanor for their leadership that day!).

Then, we went summer tubing down a humongous hill. Many of us experienced this for the very first time. This activity seemed scary at first, but we had so much fun by the end.

We also worked really hard together as a group to complete a low-ropes course. Although we had to cut this activity short due to the weather, we still felt accomplished and fully believe we would've been successful if we had more time.

Closing Circle

We like to end every event with a closing circle. If you’re unfamiliar with closing circles, it’s our way of wrapping-up in community by sharing a collective breath and voicing our head (something we learned), heart (something we felt), and hands (something we’ll take action on).

During Closing Circle, we heard our students and team members share how much fun it was meeting new people and participating in these activities with each other. Some shared hopeful sentiments that Sisterhood Outdoors will happen again.

On the bus back to Denver, everyone enjoyed various Asian and Mexican snacks– although some were familiar, others were a new delight. Many people sang their favorite songs all the way back home.

Reflections from Team AGI

Our event partnership with Convivir Colorado was intentionally designed to encourage students to connect and find commonalities with one another. We want all students to feel strong in their identities and in their communities–and this includes solidarity with other BIPOC communities.

This pilot program was also purposefully planned to be an outdoors event. Outdoor spaces today are known for being overwhelmingly white and it's due to the history of segregation and discrimination that discouraged BIPOC from engaging in outdoor spaces. AGI is committed to changing these harmful narratives and ensuring our students know that the outdoors is also a place where they can belong.

We hope this is just the beginning of our powerful partnership.

About Asian Girls Ignite

Founded in October 2020, Asian Girls Ignite (AGI) is a non-profit organization that provides educational programs for AANHPI girls and gender-expansive youth who want to celebrate their individual and collective power. We use storytelling to empower the next generation to write their futures in their own voice. Our programs and events nurture social-emotional learning to help our students grow in resilience, empathy, and self-awareness.
