Event Diaries: Diwali CelebrAsian

Diwali, also known as “The Festival of Lights,” is one of South Asia’s most widely celebrated holidays. Diwali commemorates the victory of good over evil, and some celebratory traditions include lighting fireworks or sparklers, sharing food and sweets, and wearing vibrant colors.

In October, AGI hosted a Diwali CelebrAsian for students to learn about the traditions of the holiday and to be in community with one another. We kicked off the evening by learning about the rich history of Diwali from the Amor family and partaking in an exciting tradition—lighting sparklers!

Then we enjoyed a delicious meal of samosas, chicken tikka masala, naan, butter chicken, and much more while playing the popular Indian game housie. Dinner was catered from Himchuli Indian & Nepali Cuisine. We were also joined by Rita Sheth, a talented local henna artist who shared her beautiful henna tattoo artwork with us.

Dinner fueled our group to engage in an Indian dance workshop hosted by Mudra Dance Studio. We enthusiastically danced along to “Daavudi” by Nakash Aziz, AKASA, and Anirudh Ravichander and expressed ourselves through music and dance.

The energy from our dance workshop was contagious! We kept it up for the rest of the evening and lost track of time celebrating with a big dance party!

Reflections from Team AGI

Team AGI expresses a heartfelt thank you to the staff and families who made our Diwali Celebration so special. We want to share gratitude especially for the Amor family, who have hosted our Diwali celebration for the past three years. Your dedication and support helped create a memorable experience for our students and our community.

Reflecting on this evening, we are filled with gratitude for the laughter, learning, and joy that was experienced during our time together. Learning about various cultural traditions helps us fulfill our mission to enrich the lives of our AANHPI youth.
