Event Diaries: Sisterhood Outdoors Ice skating with Convivir Colorado

We had the joy of co-hosting our second Sisterhood Outdoors event with our friends at Convivir Colorado at the beautiful ice skating Rink at Evergreen Lake!

Convivir Colorado is a Denver-based nonprofit that supports youth impacted by migration, helping them find strength in their experiences and use their voices to enrich their communities.

A huge shoutout to our amazing sponsor Arc’teryx for making this event possible—your generosity helped create a truly special day for our students!

⛸️building community, one glide at a time❄️

On a chilly, snowy morning, AGI students set off on an exciting trip to Evergreen, Colorado, eager to glide across the ice at the Rink at Evergreen Lake with students from Convivir Colorado! The day was led by our Community Manager, Hannah, and our CEO and co-founder, Joanne!

Before heading out, students enjoyed a delicious lunch from Sesame Sandwiches, a Denver-based eatery known for its Asian-inspired grab-and-go sandwiches, made-to-order Vietnamese banh mi, fresh coffee, and housemade pastries!

Students of all experience levels stepped onto the ice—some gliding with confidence, others taking their first wobbly steps. But in true AGI spirit, they cheered each other on, lent a helping hand, and most importantly, had an absolute blast!

As they embraced the cold, a cozy cup of hot chocolate and apple cider was the perfect way to warm up, make new friends, and gather around the fire to connect!

For a tasty snack, they enjoyed Onigiri from Taeko San Takeout, where the owner, Madeline Dunhoff, puts her own spin on her Japanese grandmother’s recipes, creating delicious mochi, onigiri, and curry that are uniquely hers. It was the perfect treat to fuel the fun!

✂️cozy crafting🖍️

After ice skating, students gathered at the AGI office for some cozy crafting fun! They made colorful pipe-cleaner flowers, made their own “shrinky-dinks”, and spent time laughing and unwinding with friends.

For a post ice skating snack, students warmed up with tasty empanadas from Maria Empanada. Maria Empanada was born from the cherished memories of owner Lorena, who spent summers in Córdoba, Argentina, with her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother— all named Maria. She carried with her the passion to share the flavors of her childhood, crafting each empanada by hand as a tribute to her roots.

🎒 A Special Gift to Carry Forward ✨

To wrap up the night, students were treated to a special surprise from our wonderful friend, Denver lifestyle and food content creator Michelle Nguyen! She generously donated brand-new Jansport backpacks, making the evening even more memorable.

A huge thank you to Michelle and Jansport for making this happen and for being such a valued part of our community! 😊

💫Closing Circle

We always love to end our events with a closing circle. If you’re not familiar, a closing circle is our special way of wrapping up the day together, where we take a collective breath and share what’s on our head (something we learned), heart (something we felt), and hands (something we’ll take action on).

During Closing Circle, our students and team members shared how much fun it was to meet new people and enjoy the day’s activities together.

Here are a few of the great reflections from our students:

“I got to reconnect with old AGI friends and connect with new people.”

“I’m grateful for the support we gave each other on the ice.”

“We learned how to help each other.”

“I want to get more into ice skating!”

It’s always so heartwarming to hear these reflections, and we’re excited to see how everyone carries these moments forward!

Reflections from Team AGI

Our collaboration with Convivir Colorado was thoughtfully created to encourage students to connect with one another and discover shared experiences. At AGI, we aim to empower every student to feel confident in their identity and communities, and that includes building solidarity with other BIPOC communities.

This pilot program, which launched last year, was intentionally designed as an outdoor event. Unfortunately, outdoor spaces have historically been spaces dominated by white communities, a result of segregation and discrimination that made it difficult for BIPOC individuals to feel welcome or safe. AGI is committed to challenging these harmful narratives and ensuring that our students know the outdoors is a space where they, too, can belong.

We are deeply grateful for our ongoing partnership with Convivir Colorado and are excited for what we can build together in the future.

About Asian Girls Ignite's Event Diaries.

At Asian Girls Ignite (AGI), we are on a mission to build a strong community of Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) girls and women to celebrate our individual and collective power through shared stories. Our Event Diaries series was created to share meaningful moments with our community. We are incredibly grateful to have the support of our families and community members behind us. Sharing an inside look at our events is just one of the many ways we want to keep the AGI community informed of the impact of their support.
